Thobani Quinton Mgobhozi, popularly known as Que DJ, is a South African DJ, producer, and performer from KwaMashu in Durban. He emerged from the same creative environment that helped shape the rise of Gqom, a bass-heavy electronic genre that originated in Durban’s townships and later gained global recognition.
He first came into wider attention as one half of the influential DJ duo Distruction Boyz, alongside fellow producer Goldmax. Together, they helped push Gqom from underground township parties into mainstream clubs and international festivals, with their breakout hit “Omunye” becoming a defining track of the movement.
Born and raised in KwaMashu, Que DJ is self-taught and developed his production style through experimentation rather than formal training. His early work with Distruction Boyz saw collaborations with prominent South African artists such as DJ Maphorisa, Babes Wodumo, Busiswa, DJ Tira, and Rude Boyz, strengthening his position within the national dance music scene.
As his career progressed, he transitioned into a solo path, shaping a more experimental and darker interpretation of Gqom. He is closely associated with the phrase “We Don’t Play The Same Gqom,” which reflects his distinct approach to DJ sets and production. This philosophy later influenced his sound direction under the sub-style he refers to as 'Umkhunkulu,' characterized by deep bass, hypnotic rhythms, and minimal but forceful percussion.
His solo era includes a SAMA-nominated release titled "We Don’t Play The Same Gqom" in 2020, marking a formal step into independent artistry. He has also performed internationally across cities such as Amsterdam, London, and New York, helping further establish Gqom as a global electronic music export.
Beyond performing, Que DJ has expanded into creative entrepreneurship through initiatives such as Amagogogo Sounds, a platform aimed at supporting emerging talent within electronic music. His work also extends into collaborations with global lifestyle and fashion brands, reinforcing his presence at the intersection of music and culture.
